In a departure from our usual work-related blogs, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the recent Tall Ships Aberdeen 2025 event. In this post, we’ll explore how the event unfolded and the lasting legacy it could leave for the city of Aberdeen and the Northeast of Scotland.
Although this isn’t the first time the Tall Ships have visited Aberdeen—this marks their third visit, following events in 1991 and 1997—it’s safe to say that many would agree this return was long overdue!
At Watson Alarms, we’d like to join the many thousands who marveled at the spectacular event that recently took place in Aberdeen. While we were not directly involved or a sponsor, we want to express our gratitude and thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a resounding success.
The overall Tall Ships events are organized by Sail Training International, a not-for-profit global organization dedicated to promoting experiential learning through sail training. Sail Training International offers life-changing opportunities for young people worldwide, helping them build confidence, rise to challenges, overcome fears, and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime.
The organization creates opportunities for young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to participate through bursaries and funding. In 2019 alone, over £100,000 was allocated to support this cause.
The Tall Ships Races and Regattas provide the largest setting for sail training each year, bringing together thousands of participants. These events serve as a symbol of international friendship and understanding, uniting diverse cultures and nations. In addition to funding bursaries, Sail Training International supports international research and programs that advance sail training, furthering their mission to change lives.

In the immediate aftermath of the largest free-entry event to be held in Scotland in 2025, which ran from 19th to 22nd July, over 400,000 people flocked to Aberdeen Harbour during the Tall Ships’ four-day visit. It seems that the majority of attendees had a fantastic time, with the event appearing to run smoothly and without incident.
The multi-agency team behind the event has received widespread praise not only for securing the Tall Ships’ visit but also for their thoughtful event planning. The layout of the North Harbour was particularly well-received, with ample food and toilet facilities, along with a variety of entertainment options. Music performances each night at the Quayside, Codona’s amusements, and the British Forces Military Village provided something for everyone. The event’s overall organization was also noted for making travel to and around the Harbour areas easy and efficient, ensuring a smooth experience for all attendees.
Like many cities across the UK and around the world, post-Covid has presented ongoing challenges for Aberdeen. However, one thing is certain: Tall Ships Aberdeen 2025 has been an incredible success and has provided a significant boost to the city and its local businesses. The question remains, though – can this success have a lasting impact, rather than just offering a short-term uplift?
There was an undeniable buzz around the city in the lead-up to and throughout the event, but now that it’s over, there’s a sense of longing and anticipation, especially as there’s no firm date or guarantee for the Tall Ships’ return.
The people of Aberdeen can take immense pride in showing visitors from near and far that when we put our minds to it, we can successfully promote and host major events that raise the profile of the city and the surrounding area. Aberdeen and the Northeast of Scotland offer a wealth of places to visit and explore, and we must seize this opportunity to use this event as a springboard for even greater success in the future. While we may not be able to promise sunny, warm weather, we will always offer a warm and welcoming embrace to those who visit our city.
