Case Study:
Dyce Carriers - CCTV System

Dyce carriers

Over the past 50 years Dyce Carriers have grown to become a national road transport business with a vast team of talented employees and an extensive fleet of modern vehicles. Dyce Carriers head office is in Aberdeen, but they also have depots in Dalgety Bay, Grangemouth and Poole.

Today the Dyce Carriers fleet is regularly involved in trips to Ireland and continental Europe. They operate a daily trunk route linking the North of Scotland to the South of England: a far cry from the humble beginnings, which consisted of one Morris Minor van!

From the beginning the key point of focus has been to provide great customer service and operational reliability which are traits shared with Watson Alarms. Like many organisations that grow to become large companies, they started as a modest family business. Family businesses like Dyce Carriers (and Watson Alarms!) have had to work hard to build a “good name”. In modern business, marketers call that “a brand”. What started as a common-sense business, based on family values, has grown into a national company that continues to put the happiness and welfare of its team at the forefront. The values of hard work, dedication and kindness still lie at the heart of our business. We are a flat organisation where everyone is an important part of the team regardless of their job title – part of the Dyce Carriers family.

As part of a significant investment programme at the Aberdeen Head Office site the existing CCTV System was identified as an area in need of upgrade and expansion. A rigorous tender process coordinated by Colin Johnstone was instigated to ensure Dyce Carriers received the best value in line with the proposed financial investment. Watson Alarms as an existing and long-serving provider for the Intruder Alarm System onsite and were delighted to be named as the successful bidder and by given an opportunity to demonstrate the key points of focus which we strive to achieve for all our customers.

To ensure that the CCTV installation went as smoothly as possible and with minimum disruption to day-to-day site operations a pre-install visit was arranged for our Lead Engineer to walk around the site with our surveyor, Andrew Watson, and Colin Johnstone. The majority of the project was carried out over consecutive days as planned and agreed with the Client. However, the final phase of works was coordinated alongside the building contractor responsible for the roof works on the main office building to ensure cabling penetrations and extra fixing supports where installed to accommodate the remaining CCTV cameras.

The upgraded and expanded IP CCTV System consists of 22 cameras to provide protection throughout the external and specific internal locations across the site. As part of the final specification two 4MP/8MP Panoramic/PTZ dome cameras were installed at strategic locations which can detect movement via the panoramic 180-degree camera and trigger the PTZ to move to the area where the movement was detected. The majority of the remaining external areas were protected with 8MP turret dome cameras and 2 x 4MP 180-degree panoramic cameras. All internal areas have 6MP turret dome cameras mounted in strategic locations which require additional security protection.

All cameras in each building are cabled back to a `localised` CCTV power over ethernet (PoE) network switch and then in turn transmitted back to the Network Video Recorder within the main office building which allows all cameras could be viewed live or reviewed later in high-definition images both onsite or remotely, via a network connection, on a PC/Laptop or mobile device with the appropriate software/app and user credentials.

Once the commissioning was completed a full handover and demonstration/training session was held with the Client to ensure they were completely satisfied and fully conversant with the system’s functionality and operation.

A month after completion of the project a follow-up with Colin Johnstone took place to obtain feedback on how the project had run. Colin commented that `all went well and was happy with everything` which is the outcome and feedback Watson Alarms aim to achieve on every installation project whether domestic or commercial. We value every customer, and all our employees strive to be pleasant, helpful, considerate and respectful to each and every Client who contact Watson Alarms.
